Residential Design – Hood Ornament

EAST ELEVATION copy
Hello readers,

I designed this house around the idea that someone might want to show off their car in their home. Normally garages and their contents are not on display, but I thought that I would make an exception and design something that did show off the car. I created an atrium that when you looked up you would see the car in its full glory. The photo below depicts this description.

The house is set on a hillside with the garage and bedrooms on upper floor and the main entrance and living spaces cut into the hillside a level below. The front door is reached via a curving ramp, while there is also a separate staircase that goes around the side of the house to reach the ground level. The house features 3 bedrooms and 3.5 baths with an in-ground pool, a large kitchen with pantry and wine cellar, and a glass rec room offering 270° views of the surrounding valley.

I titled the project hood ornament as my original sketch for the elevation resembled a 1930s auto hood ornament. Maybe you can see the similarities. As the design evolved, I made changes to the original sketch but the idea and the importance of the car in the design was preserved.
