Residential Design – A modern take on the center chimney

Hello readers,
As the title of the post suggests, this is my interpretation of a center chimney colonial radically modernized for today’s living. The house is visually pulled apart with the chimney set behind a curtain wall to illustrate its importance. In the past, the central chimney served as the main heating plant for the house. Today the chimney creates a decorative fireplace for the foyer as well as supporting the main staircase which sinuously wraps around it. The house is a typical 3 bedroom 2.5 bath home with the addition of a separate office and parking for a business run out of the home. The design consists of 3 boxes with rooms hanging off each box all arranged around a courtyard space. From within the courtyard there is a feeling of being on a street or alleyway which I quite liked. Additionally there is a pool viewable from both the house and the detached office. I also liked that the adult and children’s bedrooms were kept separate and segregated from one another so the adults can have some privacy.
