This week I designed a more traditional home. It is a small house for those people approaching their retirement years with 2 bedrooms and 2.5 baths and a 2-car garage. If one needed more space, there is potential for expansion over the garage. This is also one of the first houses where I was able to execute one of my favorite details, a fireplace in the foyer. The foyer fireplace has not been found in homes since Colonial times (ex. Jefferson’s Monticello or the Governor’s Mansion in Colonial Williamsburg) but its presence makes a great impression on arriving guests. My fireplace foyer is double-sided so it is also viewable from the office. The ground floor consists of an office, a living/dining room space, an eat-in kitchen with its own pantry, a first floor laundry, a mudroom, a foyer and a lav. There is also a large deck off the living room for barbecues. The second floor features 2 large bedrooms and a luxurious bathroom. Both bedrooms have walk in closets.
While not shown in the photos, this home can be alternatively configured in several different ways. An additional wing could be easily added onto the rear of the house creating space for a large formal dining room with its own fireplace or this new space could serve as a first floor master suite if the owners were less stable on their feet in their golden years. A less costly alternative is to use the office as the master bedroom if a ground floor bedroom was a necessity. Click the links below for the plans.
